Joe and Abby McDonald are the founders and owners of a new and different type of real estate company.  Wildlife Habitat Realty LLC has as its primary mission the preservation of wildlife habitat.   This is generally accomplished by making people aware of any uniquely valuable environmental features of their land and by promoting legal tools such as conservation easements.


Joe McDonald is a native of Moore Country, NC.  After graduating High school in Southern Pines NC, he served in the 101st Airborne Division and then the 77th Special Forces, one of the original special forces units.  He graduated (With honors) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Psychology and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.  After college, he worked briefly for the U.S. Public Health Service and then because of his Special Forces background was recruited by the U.S. Government to go to Vietnam to train and advise irregular Vietnamese counterguerrilla units.  Following a two-year paramilitary tour in Vietnam, he entered the Diplomatic Service and served in numerous U.S. embassies throughout the world, including two years in Moscow.  After retirement from the Foreign Service, he founded Wildlife Habitat Realty, LLC.  He was a founding member of the Sandhills Area Land Trust and of the NC Alliance for Transportation Reform and continues to serve on those boards.  Joe also serves on the Board of Advisors for the Land Trust for Central NC.  He continues to work today as a conservation-oriented broker in Hoffman, NC.  Joe loves to hunt, fish, train bird dogs and play bluegrass music.  He and his wife, Abby (of Pinehurst, NC), have four children and four grandchildren.
